Shawarma King has closed on The Loop
Delmar Loop eatery Shawarma King at 517 Melville Ave., closed last week. Owner Mohammed Alsalem notified Sauce via email yesterday, Jan. 16.
Shawarma King opened in early 2017. It landed at the No. 12 spot on Sauce’s Best New Restaurants list that same year.
Known for its marinated chicken and beef, falafel and veggie platter, the small eatery was a go-to spot in The Loop for authentic Middle Eastern fare.
“Enticing cafes like this can be found along city streets all over the world – you could just as easily be in Istanbul, London or Amman as in St. Louis,” Sauce critic Stephanie Zeilenga wrote in her September 2017 review. “In other words: This is legit.”
Alsalem could not be reached for further comment.
