Here’s what Sauce wine columnist Glenn Bardgett is drinking this month. Check with your favorite liquor store or wine shop for availability.
CA’ MARCANDA PROMIS 2005, TUSCANY, ITALY
For over a century, the Gaja name has represented the very best of what Nebbiolo grapes can make in Piedmont. In the past few years, Angelo Gaja has expanded his repertoire to include the coastal area of Maremma in the region of Tuscany. This blend of 55 percent Merlot, 35 percent Syrah and 10 percent Sangiovese is aged in French oak barrels and offers incredible style and elegance. With every sip, I heard the wine say to me, “Veal chop!”
ADELSHEIM AUXERROIS 2007, WILLAMETTE VALLEY, ORE.
This is the first American-made Auxerrois that I have ever tasted. A medieval white grape from Burgundy, Auxerrois makes a juicy, appley, peachy, crisp wine that is just waiting for some fresh seafood. I have been a total fan of Adelsheim’s Pinot Noirs for over a decade, but this was a true epiphany.
SCHRAMSBERG BLANC DE NOIRS 2005, NAPA VALLEY, CALIF.
This venerable Napa Valley vintner uses grapes from Mendocino, Sonoma, Napa and Marin for this gorgeous, lightly copper-colored celebratory beverage. The 90 percent Pinot Noir and 10 percent Chardonnay blend gives it a Blanc de Noirs (white wine from black grapes) hue and adds weight to the lusciousness.
