Halloween in May

May 20th 12:05pm, 2009

Chicago’s All Candy Expo is one of the most exciting and delicious events of the year. Yesterday I spent seven hours at McCormick Place eating the latest and best in chocolate, candy, salty snacks and other confections. This year over 450 confectionery and snack companies unveiled more than 2,000 new sweet and savory products in a frenzied room encompassing nearly 10 football fields.

The trade show is attended by buyers, suppliers and store owners from across the globe. Their purchasing decisions will affect what we see in St. Louis-area stores in the coming months. Here are a few of my favorite things from the show:

Best chocolate/candy: Landrin Classic Waferatto. These round truffles are a combination of white chocolate and shredded coconut with an almond and creamy white chocolate filling. These truffles are immensely popular in Europe; look for a U.S. debut this summer.
Best salty snack: Sensible Portions 8 Grain Crisps. These crisps are made with whole grain, rice and oat flour are quite tasty and healthy because they have half the fat of regular potato chips. Find the Sensible Portions flavors – including Peppadew and fiesta chile and lime – at Costco, Sam’s Club and Whole Foods Market.
Most healthful product: Brother’s All Natural Fruit Crisps. Available in Fuji apple and Asian pear, among other flavors, these freeze-dried all-fruit crisps contain almost as many vitamins as fresh fruit but are much sweeter and more fun to eat.
Most innovative and bizarre product: Le Whif. Quite possibly the oddest product at the All Candy Expo, Le Whif is a cigar-shaped plastic device that shoots zero-calorie chocolate powder into your mouth when you breathe in. It’s available in four flavors and is expected to make its U.S. launch this summer.
