The Scoop: Gyros and Gateway grub newest food truck fare

October 5th 02:10pm, 2011

100511_gyroThe area food truck scene is hardly congested, but traffic sure is picking up as two new food trucks prepare to hit the streets.

First up, Go! Gyro! Go! will be serving a slew of Greek dishes such as Greek-style pork or chicken shish kebabs, beef and lamb gyros with tzatziki, Greek-style oven-roasted potatoes and a Greek country salad called horiatki salata. According to the company’s Facebook page, recipes hail from co-owner Nick Cowlen’s grandmother and his travels to Greece (including his ancestral land of Zakynthos). Cowlen hopes to be ready to roll for the final Food Truck Friday of the season, to be held on October 14 at Tower Grove Park.

The other food truck preparing to hit the streets is 2 Girls 4 Wheels, a project by downtown St. Louis residents Cherish Patterson and Jamie Gruntman. The pair will be serving up food that matches the company’s tag line: “Serving Gateway grub while showing St. Louis love.” The menu will include t-ravs, pulled pork sandwiches and a couple of custom hot dogs, including a spicy cheese version and the STL Dipping Dog, which is battered in Italian seasonings, fried, rolled in Provel cheese and served with a choice of marinara or strawberry jam. The duo will also put a spin on a traditional grilled cheese, adding fresh dates to melted Colby jack and Muenster cheeses sandwiched between two slices of Texas toast. On the lighter side will be a grilled chicken salad sandwich with fresh red and green peppers and yogurt sauce, while sides will include house-made coleslaw, sweet potato fries and waffle fries. For dessert, look for beignets – served traditionally with powdered sugar and even injected with Nutella or strawberry jam – and frozen custard from Ted Drewes. Patterson expects the custom-outfitted truck to arrive from New York in a couple weeks in time to hit downtown streets by the end of October.

To track the whereabouts of Go! Gyro! Go!, follow it on Facebook and Twitter. Though 2 Girls 4 Wheels has yet to set up a Twitter handle, you can find it on Facebook.
