The Scoop: Keeping up with the ever-swinging door

November 3rd 10:11am, 2011

110311_patshannonWith a week’s worth of happy and sad news from the restaurant world to share, let’s be optimists and start with the positives. Reifschneider’s Grill and Grape, a restaurant that opened a year ago last August in Columbia, Ill., will soon see a second location. Owners Dan and Heather Reifschneider will be opening their No. 2 some 20 miles southeast of St. Louis on State Street in Freeburg, Ill. Watch for a December launch.

The coming of Sump Coffee should make craft coffee drinkers smile. As reported by Ian Froeb of the Riverfront Times, the coffee shop will make its home at 3700 S. Jefferson Ave. No word yet on when owner Scott Carey will unlock doors at this South City spot.

Now for the closures. Flavors BBQ Sports Bar & Grill, located at 4317 Manchester Ave., has called it quits. Flavors opened in late spring 2010 and was one of the Barbecue: Ten Spots to Try restaurants featured in our June 2011 issue. Just last week, The Scoop reported that another restaurant in The Grove, Crostini, had seen the end of its short life. A nod to RFT’s Froeb for noticing that Flavors is no more.

Finally, El Borracho Taqueria, located downtown at 2001 Locust St., closed its doors for good last Sunday after a three-year run, as reported by Gabe Hartwig of the Post-Dispatch. Co-owner Pat Shannon-VanMatre (pictured) told The Scoop that while the lackluster economy played a part in the closure, the decision stemmed more directly from a lease negotiation. “We were needing to renegotiate the lease,” she explained. “Opening when the economy was crashing, we never economically got to a point where we felt like extending into a long-term lease was something we wanted to take on. We decided, with the long-term lease looming, it was time that we close the doors.”
