Drink This Weekend Edition: Thinking spring? Try these delightful white wines
March 2nd 02:03pm, 2012
As we shed bulky sweaters and welcome warm weather, we’re also thinking “light” when it comes to wine. Here is a trio of tasty whites to stock up on in anticipation of spring. And, as an extra ray of sunshine, all three wines are priced below $20.
2010 Bonotto Delle Tezze Montesanto Pinot Grigio This wine, which hails from the Veneto region of northeastern Italy, is 100-percent pinot grigio. If the bouquet of peach and tropical fruit – especially pineapple – isn’t enough to win you over, the showstopping, light copper hue that results from fermenting the grapes with their skins for a short period should seal the deal. $15. Urzi’s Blue Ridge Italian Market, 5430 Southwest Ave., St. Louis, 314.645.3914
2010 Craggy Range Te Muna Road Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc Lately, I’m in love with whites from New Zealand and this bottle is no exception. Take a nice big whiff of that blend of sage, lime and passion fruit before feeling some refreshing, citrus-like acidity touch your palate. $17. The Wine Merchant, 20 South Hanley Road, Clayton, 314.863.6282, winemerchantltd.com
2009 Jermann Ribolla Gialla Vinnae Servus Cella This beautiful wine, by one of the most prestigious Friuli producers, is a blend of Ribolla Gialla, Tocai Friuliano and riesling. The fresh minerality of this medium-bodied, pale straw-colored wine would make it a fine pair for fish and seafood. $19. Veritas Gateway to Food & Wine, 1722 Clarkson Road, Chesterfield, 636.530.9505, veritasgateway.com
