The Scoop: A frozen taste of the tropics in Soulard

March 21st 11:03am, 2012

St. Louis may not have an ocean, but we can pretend that surf and sandy beaches are ours at The Island, a frozen yogurt shop that opened recently in Soulard. The store, located at 1009 A Russell Blvd., is bedecked in island décor – from a rolling ocean wave mosaic entryway floor to a thatched roof reminiscent of a tropical Tiki hut and even custom-made clear glass tables filled with sand and beach shells.

The island escape continues with tropical-themed flavors like Island Colada, Bunch of Bananas and Orange Dream. The shop currently offers eight single flavors, plus four swirled options, of frozen yogurt as well as sorbets, with flavors switched up regularly. General manager Jennifer Groby noted that the yogurt is manufactured locally by Pacific Valley Dairy in Pacific, Mo., and that the frozen treats are gluten-free and certified kosher. A vast variety of toppings is also available.

The Island is open daily from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. A website is currently under construction, but for now, you can find out more about this tropical paradise on the river on its Facebook page.
