St. Louis Scotch club meets tonight

What may just be St. Louis’ premier Scotch-tasting club is finally off and running. After much planning and teasing via a beautifully designed Web site (www.scotchstl.com), the Drummond MacDougall’s Single Malt Society hosts its first tasting tonight at the Wine and Cheese Place in Clayton starting at 6:30 p.m.

Scotch lover Kirk Figus promises a fun and informal event every other month for novices and Scotch veterans alike. The group will explore and taste five different malts at each meeting – including some sufficiently expensive that you might never get around to trying them otherwise.

The initial tasting, “Tour of Scotland,” features five Scotches from five different regions: Glenkinchie 1991 Distiller’s Edition, Glenfarclas 25 Year Old, Talisker 175th Anniversary, Laphroaig 10 Year Old and Laphroaig 15 Year Old.

Figus’ site quotes a review describing the Talisker as “complex on the nose, with sweetness overlying smoke. Elegant heather and bourbon notes in the background. Sweet and smoky on the palate, coconut, spices and a hint of liquorice. Long and slightly salty in the finish.”

The tastings cost $28 a night and include cheese and crackers, too.
