The Scoop: Burger joint The Dam opening next to Amsterdam Tavern

February 17th 12:02pm, 2013

Amsterdam Tavern is getting a new neighbor. Considering that this neighbor will be a burger joint, hungry soccer fans who frequent the no-kitchen tavern in Tower Grove South should be happy, regardless of which club they root for. The restaurant, called The Dam, located at 3173 Morgan Ford Road, is the newest venture by Michele Coen-Racanelli. She is the owner of Michele C. Catering & Events (website coming) and a former co-owner of Onesto Pizza and Trattoria in Princeton Heights as well as the now defunct Big V’s Burger Joint in The Loop.

Coen-Racanelli explained that many of the crowd pleasers from the Big V’s menu will resurface at The Dam, including The Animal, a beast of a burger with its trio of patties plus barbecue sauce, American cheese, bacon, grilled onions and roasted jalapeños. Burgers are “hand-packed, always fresh, never frozen,” she noted. Other items at the casual eatery will include hand-cut fries served with a selection of dipping sauces. And, since The Dam will operate during the same hours as its watering hole neighbor, if there’s a must-see match in the morning hours, The Dam will be serving up breakfast fare.

The Dam will have eat-in space for 20 diners – all stools at a countertop rather than table seating. An interior connection between Amsterdam Tavern and The Dam will make it easy for sports fans to grab some grub fast at the countertop or to have their food served at Amsterdam’s bar or beer garden. In addition, Coen-Racanelli mentioned that once the build-out at The Dam is completed, the beer garden at Amsterdam will undergo a renovation.

Look for floodgates to open at The Dam in early May.
