This week, Catherine Klene is obsessed with…

July 5th 12:07pm, 2013

{Russell’s on Macklind recently thwarted my attempt at healthy when I saw this: lemon and blackberry strata. Normally part of the Sunday brunch, we ordered it as a small treat with our veggie-filled wraps. What arrived was a hunk of quivering egg pastry served with house-made lemon curd and maple syrup. The lemon zinged against the sweet blackberries and brown sugar. I was forced to admit all the spinach in the world could not salvage this once healthy meal. Luckily, I had lemon curd to ease my pain.}

{Learning to light my dad’s Weber kettle was a rite of passage in my family: stacking the charcoal, spreading the coals for even heat distribution – and no lighter fluid. Ever. Now, a hulking charcoal kettle doesn’t exactly fit the small porch at my apartment. Enter my mini Weber, the Smokey Joe. Tiny but mighty, this little baby means I can happily grill up meats, veg and stone fruit all summer long. True, I won’t be smoking a rack of ribs any time soon, but some things are best left to the original grill master anyway.}

{Not everyone was blessed with Ted Drewes growing up, but don’t pity us too much. Belleville, Ill., children have The White Cottage. Its specialty sundaes, floats and concretes are great, but it’s the house-made ice cream I can’t resist. My most recent indulgence: a sugar cone with two scoops of cookie-dough ice cream, dipped in chocolate shell and topped with toasted pecans. For dinner. Juvenile, you say? Lalala, I can’t hear you….}
