The Scoop: Farm-fresh foods coming to Wildwood

Residents of West County will be pleased to hear that they won’t have to travel very far to find farm-fresh produce this summer. Come spring, The Farmers’ Market of Wildwood will set up shop on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Wildwood Town Center. Expect a variety of regional and local produce, dairy, meats, baked goods and crafts, reports market master Mike Russell, whose Whistle Stop Market stand has long been part of the Kirkwood Farmers’ Market. The Wildwood market will kick off its inaugural season on May 9.

With at least 2 markets opening this year in that area it’ll be interesting to see how they are organized…..I’d hope that Sauce writers would distinguish between a growers market and a brokers’ market. Rumors are bouncing around about several other markets openning this or next year……loads of farmers are trying to figure out how big they are going to grow, how many staff they’ll need to hire and if they can maintain the quality that makes them do what they do. It’s great to see various grocery stores hop on board and try to access more local products. Same with restaurants, there are several new chefs that have become regulars at the markets.
