In the last two years, Dylan Mosley has made a name for himself around St. Louis with his penchant for classic, sessionable beers at The Civil Life Brewing Co. When I’m sitting at a barstool at other breweries, I often hear head brewers imploring out-of-towners to visit The Civil Life. They use words like “to style” and “traditional” when describing them. While ultra-hopped and barrel-aged beers often steal the spotlight among beer geeks, the truth is many who created those beers say they want to finish off their brew day with a pint of a classic.

The newest beer to come out of the Tower Grove South brewery is their Northern English Brown. Now you may ask, don’t they already have a brown ale? And indeed, you are correct. The Civil Life’s American Brown Ale was a hit from day one. But while American Brown is a deep dark brown, the new Northern English Brown is a rich amber, almost mahogany in appearance. Instead of the chocolate notes found in American Brown, look for a sweeter, almost nutty flavor complemented by hints of toffee in this new brew. Mosley’s use of Northdown hops also gives the Northern English Brown a subtle woody, spicy finish American Brown does not have.

At only 4.9 percent ABV, Northern English Brown can be enjoyed alone or with food. Try pairing it with root vegetables, a classic roast beef sandwich or Gruyere cheese. You’ll find that the nutty undertones of the beer complement all of these quite nicely.

The Northern English Brown is available now at The Civil Life Brewery Co., and soon at better beer bars and restaurants in the St. Louis area. Grab a pint this weekend and toast to The Civil Life as it celebrates two years of great beer.
