The Scoop: Kirkwood Deli and Market to serve grocery, gyro needs of nearby community
February 23rd 12:02pm, 2011
Mom and pop grocery stores can be special places. Sam Abdallah certainly agrees, which is why he is opening a deli and market in Kirkwood. The market will be located at 500 W. Essex Ave., in the space formerly occupied by the popular Majic Market. Abdallah’s father is the property owner of the space.
Kirkwood Deli and Market will be both deli and grocery store. In addition to offering great cuts of cheese and fresh meats, the deli will also have an extensive take-out menu. Although the menu is still being finalized, Abdallah intends to honor the store’s past as a gyro stop. “We will still have an incredible gyro sandwich,” said Abdallah, who has 20 years of experience in the restaurant industry.
The 2,500-square-foot space will also be stocked with grocery items and non-food, convenience products. One section of the store will even be dedicated entirely to products made by Kirkwood businesses. “We want to advertise the area of Kirkwood,” explained Abdallah. “It’s a community-driven project.” The desire to serve nearby residents has also prompted Abdallah to offer grocery delivery, which will begin about six months after the store opens. “It will be a throwback to the 40s and 50s,” he noted.
The renovation is slated to begin soon and Abdallah expects the project to take four to six weeks. When construction concludes, customers will find old-world signage but an interior with a contemporary feel. “We are really trying to build something special at this place,” said Abdallah. “We want to give this store back to Kirkwood.”

I’ll wait for Jacob, who worked to popularized the gyros at that location for the last six years, to open his new place. The original is always better than the copy, sorry “honor the store’s past”. Seems to me like Abdallah saw someone with a successful business in his building and decided to cash in for himself. Careful, he just might decide to start a publication called “Gravy” and write about local St Louis restaurants “and honor” Sauce.

Ive been going to this spot for 30 years and let me tell you, they are not copying Jacob. The original person who ran majic market was Omar(Sam’s FATHER) who originally had the gyros. I bet you feel pretty silly Joe.

I went into the store once to pick up some beer and I ended up getting a gyro, it tasted awful! it was burnt to a crisp on the grill because some kid was joking around with some kid hanging out on the counter. I’ll never go back there if that is the way that place is ran. The worst part is the kid taking my order gave me an attitude when I told him I wanted a gyro, I’ve learned my lesson to never go back there again

Hey, Jim Straus, what the story you try to spread out. Omar, Sam’s father, never been an a owner of the Majic Market. I have been resident of Kirkwood for a long time & I very well know how this corner has been developed.
Omar purchased this building at the end of 1990 & this space was rented in early 1991 by the Nadim family and Nick, his business partner. Name of the store was NM Majik Market. What kind of gyro did Omar served? When Jacob took the ownership of Majic Market, he continued tradition started by Nadim family.
My family & all my friends felt so sorry when Jacob was forced to move out from this corner, but all of us are so happy that Jacob reopened Majic Market at Woodbine Rd. just across from the 7/11. Excellent location, unlimited parking, very easy to get in & get out. A wonderful selection of delicious foods, great service, & friendly atmosphere equivalent to the name of this place “Majic”.
Serving the Boar’s Head brand product makes Majic Market a favorite deli place in Kirkwood. This is the opinion from the majority of the Kirkwood residence.
I absolutely agree with Jordan Sneed opinion because I heard similar comments from my neighbors.
