The Scoop: Two area restaurants close their doors

Monday, June 6th, 2011

060611_fattedcalfIt looks like it’s time to say farewell to two longtime area restaurants.

The Fatted Calf, which opened in 1966, will be closing its doors permanently after lunch service on June 30. Kathleen Portman, who owns the business with her husband, Jason Portman, cited a decline in business as the reason for shuttering the operation at 12 S. Bemiston Ave., in Clayton.

“We bought it on July 1, 2008, but we never enjoyed the same lunch lines the [previous] owner did,” explained Portman, who added that she and her husband would be willing to sell the restaurant to an interested party. “It’s a shame,” said Portman. “It’s been around for 44 years. We would love to find someone to buy it and keep it going.”

There’s more news of closed doors in The Loop. After a more than 25-year run, Brandt’s Café has closed, as first reported by Riverfront Times’ Ian Froeb. Owner Adam Brandt, who purchased the business from his uncle, Jay Brandt, attempted to reinvigorate business this spring by bringing in a chef to shake up the menu and even turning the space into a lounge in the late evening hours. Last week, he announced his decision to close Brandt’s on the restaurant’s Facebook page.

Lastly, it appears that Webster Groves candy store Just Around the Corner has closed. The store, located at 7919 Big Bend Blvd., in the Old Orchard Business District, specialized in retro sweets and hard-to-find candy bars. While we have not yet received confirmation of the closing from the owner, the space appears to have shuttered its doors, the phone has been disconnected and several e-mails to ownership have gone unanswered. More as we learn it.
