Frankenpizzas: 7 weirdly wonderful pies

We can only assume each of these monstrosities began in the heart of a hungry drunk, and we thank them.

1. The T-Rav Pie at The Sliced Pint
The ultimate St. Louis drunk food: This double-decker pie is stuffed with toasted ravioli filling. The second crust is adorned with your choice of toppings to solve the age-old, late-night dilemma: pizza or t-ravs?

2. Felix’s Baby Back Pie at Felix’s Pizza Pub
This 18-incher is topped with a half slab of ribs: Shredded rib meat, barbecue sauce and a sprinkle of dry rub join with mozzarella and are crowned with the final three bone-in ribs for good measure. It looks prehistoric.

3. The Clayton at Felix’s Pizza Pub
Why choose between Thai and Italian? Coconut red curry replaces standard tomato sauce in this fusion pie, which is topped with chicken, lettuce, tomato, green onion and a deluge of jalapeno ranch sauce.

 4. Cubano at Pi Pizzeria
Is it a sandwich or a pizza? Who cares when yellow mustard replaces tomato sauce and is layered with a healthy dose of Swiss cheese, savory slow-cooked pulled pork shoulder, country ham and dill pickle slices for a pie that satisfies all kinds of cravings.

5. Tim’s Breakfast Pizza Pie at Chris’ @ the Docket
Slathered in sausage gravy and topped with smoked cheddar, sunny side up eggs and broccolini, this pie stands out as exceptionally odd amongst its breakfast pizza compatriots.

6. Vampire Slayer at Basso
This fancy Frankenpizza version of a sausage pie features shrimp sausage, Fresno chiles, salmoriglio (an Italian dressing made from lemon juice, garlic, oregano and olive oil) and garlic chips with a creamy fontina bechamel.

 7. Spaghetti Pizza at Jonny’s Pizza & Pasta
This is exactly what it sounds like: just spaghetti noodles and a sweet house-made meat sauce on a hand-tossed crust with mozzarella cheese. The place isn’t called pizza or pasta, people.

From a new kitchen supply shop on Manchester to a new doughnut shop in Tulsa, Oklahoma, here’s what went down in the STL food scene last week, ICYMI.

1. If you need a tart pan, Lemon Gem Kitchen Goods will surely have them stocked when it opens in The Grove at 4180 Manchester Ave., this fall. Why? Owner Beth Styles’ missing tart pan sparked the idea for her kitchen supply store.

2. Strange Donuts will be no stranger in Tulsa, Oklahoma next spring when it sets up shop at the north corner of East Archer Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

3. Sarah’s Cake Shop owner Jill Umbarger attempted to quietly open Sarah’s on Central at 127 N. Central Ave., in Eureka last Wednesday, Aug. 10, and was met with a line out the door.

4. This fall, Chris’ Pancakes & Dining will take its breakfast game downtown to a new location, Chris’ @ The Docket, at 100 N. Tucker Blvd.

5. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Missouri will open Anew, a ground-floor restaurant and rooftop event space, at 501 N. Grand Blvd.

 

 

The Scoop: Chris’ Pancakes to open downtown location, Chris’ @ The Docket

This fall, Chris’ Pancakes & Dining will take its breakfast game downtown to a new location, Chris’ @ The Docket, at 100 N. Tucker Blvd. As reported by the Riverfront Times, Chris’ will move into the space formerly occupied by The Docket.

“We feel the breakfast market is underserved in the downtown area. We’ve been looking for places for while down there,” said co-owner Chris Saracino. “I think we can serve the area well.”

Rathern than duplicate Chris’ Pancakes, Saracino said they will tailor Chris’ @ The Docket’s menu and hours to the space and local clientele. Since the space included a wood-fire pizza oven, Saracino plans to serve pizzas, including a few breakfast pizza options he is currently testing. To better serve patrons including Saint Louis University law students, court workers and city workers, the downtown location will focus on breakfast and lunch items and feature a grab-and-go section where patrons can quickly pick up sandwiches, salads, pizza slices and breakfast items.

The 105-seat restaurant will be open for full breakfast and lunch service from 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., and the grab-and-go area will remain open until 6 p.m. After those hours, Saracino will make the 4,200-square-foot space available for private events. Chris’ @ The Docket is slated to open by late September or early October.
