Four St. Louis-area businesses win Good Food Awards

The winners of the 2018 Good Food Awards, which honors businesses committed to socially and environmentally conscious food, were announced on Jan. 19. This year, four local purveyors took home awards, proving that St. Louis is more than just good at good food.

Blueprint Coffee, Larder & Cupboard, Perennial Artisan Ales and Still 630 Distillery all received awards. They were chosen from among 2,000 entrants in 15 different categories, including coffee, preserves and beer.

Larder & Cupboard won in the preserve category for its Strawberry Lemon preserves and its Apricot-Lemon Thyme preserves, and Blueprint Coffee earned an award for its Ethiopian Hambela. Blueprint Coffee co-owner Mike Marquard said this award is a great honor, not just for the local roaster but also for the Hambela Estate, which produced coffee.

“We partnered with them originally because of their quality, but their social and environmental programs are great,” he said. “They are doing outgrower programs for things like better education and better farming practices. It’s a great honor to have our African company recognized.”

Perennial Artisan Ales was recognized for two beers: Savant Beersel, which uses grapes from Charleville Vineyards in Ste. Genevieve, and Glitter & Gold. Perennial on-premise operations and event manager Katie Godoy said this award highlighted the importance of social and environmental responsibility. “It’s really nice to be recognized for the efforts we are doing, but a lot of people may not know about,” Godoy said.

Still 630 Distillery earned an award in the spirits category for its Expedition Rum. Owner David Weglarz said the award validated his hard work. “It’s a recognition of all the things we’ve done and our attention to quality and to detail,” he said.

Larder & Cupboard owner Cindy Higgerson did not return requests for comment.

The Scoop: Nate Hereford to exit Niche, Brasserie’s Nick Blue to take the helm

Niche executive chef Nate Hereford will hang up his apron at the Clayton institution at the end of May. Hereford said he has accepted a position at Hampton Creek as a research, design and development chef in San Francisco.

Niche Food Group chef-owner Gerard Craft said Brasserie executive chef Nick Blue has been tapped to take the top toque at Niche, and Brian Moxey has been named executive chef at Brasserie.

“We’re excited as a company for (Hereford) to take on the big picture stuff,” Craft said. “It’s what we drive for in this company, (but) in a bigger way. It’s so awesome that great leaders are taking this on.”

Hampton Creek is a food production company that focuses on making sustainable products that are good for the consumer and the wider food system. It is the company behind Just Mayo and Just Cookie Dough.

“I’m really excited to be involved with big picture food sustainability issues,” said Hereford. “These issues are near and dear to my heart. This is an opportunity to make a difference in the food system, (in) our kids’ future.”

Hereford has been at Niche for six-and-a-half years, working his way from cook to sous chef to executive chef of the nationally acclaimed restaurant. Craft said he appreciated Hereford’s leadership on the line and within the company.

“Nate’s a lot more (of) even-keeled person than me,” Craft said. “That’s helped him get through a lot of struggles in the process of developing a new cuisine. I’ve learned a ton from that. Not everything’s the end of the world. His even-keeled attitude has allowed him to take the team through a lot of failure. That’s been huge. I’ll definitely miss that.”

Craft pulled Hereford’s replacement from within the Niche Food Group team, tapping Brasserie’s executive chef to take the top spot at Niche. Craft said Blue was the first person he thought of to take the role, citing his experience in both the tradition and history of food and his forward-thinking creativity.

“You have to have both,” said Craft. “He is his own person and also has a playful side that will be fun to see develop. He has huge, huge shoes to fill, and he knows that.”

Blue said he was excited to take on the job. “What Nate’s done has been amazing,” Blue said. “I’m looking forward to keeping the ball rolling and using local Missouri ingredients.”

While Blue has worked in the Niche kitchen intermittently over the years, he and Hereford will spend the next month working together. Blue will also keep one foot at Brasserie to train its new executive chef. Moxey has spent the last two years as head chef at Perennial Artisan Ales, but he previously worked within Niche Food Group at Pastaria. “I have a respect for classic French food,” Moxey said. “I look forward to working with a great group of people.”

Perennial co-owner Emily Wymore said control of the south city brewery’s kitchen will stay in house. Chef Kaleigh Brundick, who has worked with Moxey in Perennial’s kitchens and has three-and-a-half years at Perennial, will step up to head chef.

“We were lucky to have (Moxey),” Wymore said. “He’s an extremely talented chef. We’re excited to see what (Brundick) brings. She has a great palate and is passionate about local, seasonal, ingredient-focused food.”

The Scoop: Local breweries take top RateBeer awards

It was a good weekend for the St. Louis beer scene as several breweries, restaurants and retailers took home RateBeer awards at the website’s annual festival and awards show last weekend, Jan. 30 and 31. The awards are based on user reviews of craft beers from around the world.

Earthbound Beer took home the award for Missouri’s best new brewery. “They sent us and email, and we thought it was a scam,” said co-owner Stuart Keating. The award was legitimate though, and an honor for the expanding brewery. “I’m so proud of everyone at Earthbound,” Keating said. “It’s a group effort and everyone works so hard and to have that effort recognized is supremely awesome.”

Earthbound plans to start keg distribution to 35 St. Louis metro bars and restaurants in February and move to a larger brewery and tasting room on Cherokee Street later this year.

Perennial Artisan Ales took home best beer in Missouri with its barrel-aged Abraxas. “It’s one of the most labor intensive beers,” said Perennial co-owner Phil Wymore. “I think that comes through in the finished product.”

Wymore said he values the democratic process by which winners are chosen and acknowledges the pressure to keep performing at a high level. “It’s a real honor when we win, but the patting ourselves on the back is a short process,” he said. “We need to meet a level of expectation.”

Side Project Brewing also took top honor as best brewer in the state and rated the eighth best brewery in the world. “It was crazy, absolutely crazy and an incredible honor for how tiny we are,” said co-owner Karen King. “It’s motivating us to make the best beer we can.” The Side Project Cellar was also honored as the top Missouri brewer tap room. “I’m very excited about that,” said King. “We have a great team there.”

Other area restaurants and retailers took top spots, including Schlafly Tap Room, which won Missouri’s best brewpub. Baileys’ Range was awarded Missouri’s best restaurant beer retailer, while Bridge Tap House & Wine Bar won Missouri’s best bar beer retailer. Clayton’s Wine and Cheese Place was rated Missouri’s best bottle shop.

 

The Scoop: Craft beer guru Cory King comes aboard Perennial Artisan Ales

071111_perennialAs we await the opening of one of St. Louis’ newest small-batch microbreweries, Perennial Artisan Ales, word comes that Cory King is joining Perennial co-founders Phil and Emily Wymore in their craft beer venture. King, who is an avid home brewer and a former “beertender” at International Tap House, told The Scoop that he will leave his present job as craft beer manager for Lohr Distributing in August. STL Hops blogger Mike Sweeney will take his place at Lohr, as he announced on his blog.

King will have his hands full at Perennial, where the focus is on making premium craft beers using organic malts, exotic yeast strains and locally sourced fruits, as well as wild fermenting and spirits barrel-aging programs. In addition to assisting Phil Wymore with brewing, King will be selling beer and bartending at the 3,200-square-foot tasting room at Perennial, which is located at 8125 Michigan Ave., in South City.
