Underground adventures

Monday, October 19th, 2009

The great thing about Forking Fantastic: Put the Party Back in Dinner Party is the way the new cookbook manages to capture the warm, semidrunken, occasionally raucous vibe of 20 people stuffed into a small residence in Queens, New York, eating and drinking until they’re gloriously satiated, and feeling that afterglow.

Zora O’Neill and Tamara Reynolds are the foul-mouthed, self-taught cooks who turned Reynolds’ modest home into an underground supper club. There, they feed about 20 lucky people twice a month. Next Wednesday, however, they’ll be at Left Bank Books in the Central West End, talking about Forking Fantastic and serving up samples from it.

The menu at O’Neill and Reynolds’ supper club is inspired by what’s seasonal, and whatever random goofiness the gals are into that week. Highlights have included Commando Chicken, cooked directly on an oven rack, with a panful of sliced potatoes underneath to catch the tasty drippings; overnight chuck roast; the irresistible candied bacon; and the redoubtable croquembouche (a foot-high tower of cream puffs held together by caramel glaze), aka “the croke monster.”

In addition to inspiring you to host more dinner parties and make more worthy strangers into friends, the book effectively makes you feel the authors’ joy in cooking, in eating and in seeing others appreciate their food. No less than Jamie Naked Chef Oliver and Tony Kitchen Confidential Bourdain offer enthusiastic jacket blurbs.

Reynolds and O’Neill offer this refreshing kitchen advice, too: “Jump in blindly … only a project with a spectacular chance of failure will be a truly smashing success.” Their event at Left Bank starts at 7 p.m. Click here for more information.
