Ozzie’s returns!

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

010510_ozziesmithIt would seem, to paraphrase Mark Twain, that rumors of Ozzie’s Sports Bar & Restaurant’s demise have been greatly exaggerated.

As we mournfully reflected here, the fixtures from the shuttered jock joint at Westport Plaza went to auction less than three months ago – but now a new eatery downtown is scheduled to bear the name of beloved Cardinals Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith.

Restaurateur Roberto Gallardo (yes, the scion of Ramon Gallardo, founder of Casa Gallardo and former owner of Ozzie’s at Westport) is helming this one, with a licensing agreement that permits the use of the Wizard’s name and likeness, along with a new home for his dazzling display of 13 Rawlings Gold Glove trophies.

“Ozzie is very excited about the downtown location, and so am I,” said Gallardo. “Being closer to all the sporting venues is great, along with being in the loft district, and all the commercial businesses downtown. To have an opportunity to find a place to continue this tradition is great.”

The swanky take on a bar and grill will occupy two floors at 1511 Washington Ave., by the City Museum. Gallardo hopes to complete renovations and launch the new Ozzie’s by baseball’s opening day in April.

And the menu, which focused on burgers, wings, pizza and so forth at the Westport location? “A lot of it will be similar to the old Ozzie’s, with some new surprises,” Gallardo promised.
