3 can’t-miss beers at the Brewers Guild Halloween Party

It finally feels like fall, Halloween decorations adorn the streets of Lafayette Square and we’re stuffing our faces with fun-sized candy bars. That means it’s time for ghosts, goblins and beer drinkers to unite once again for the annual St. Louis Brewers Guild Halloween Party.

Snag your tickets online and head to Lafayette Park this Saturday, Oct. 28 from 1 to 5 p.m. in your classiest Halloween costumes. You’ll enjoy some of the sudsiest the local craft beer scene has to offer. Don’t miss these brews for a spooky good time.

1. 2nd Shift El Gato Negro (7.6-percent) is the cat-worshipping brewery’s ode to Halloween. If you are a fan of El Gato Grande, then go “getchyasum” of this delicious full-bodied black IPA. The hop profile is the same, but the more heavily roasted, darker malt bill creates a beautiful bittersweet chocolate aroma and flavor that pairs perfectly with the resin, citrus and spice notes coming from the Citra, Amarillo and Columbus hops.

2. Third Wheel Imperial Oktoberfest (7.4-percent) is the perfect complement to this chilly fall weather. A touch heavier than most Oktoberfest-style offerings, this medium-bodied, malt-forward original from brewer Abbey Spencer and company will keep those toes warm. Caramel malt, earth and cereal notes drive a palate that finishes with just a touch of biscuity malt sweetness and boozy astringency.

3. 4 Hands Tiki Chocolate Milk Stout (5.5-percent ABV) is probably the greatest of the 4 Hands’ Chocolate Milk Stout family. Coffee, chocolate and coconut are at the forefront in this, dare I say it, Mounds Bar-esque adult beverage. You know, because sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don’t. It’s deliciously sweet and medium-bodied with aromatics dominated by coconut and chocolate and balanced on the back with a lingering dark chocolate and coffee bitterness.

Drink This Weekend Edition: St. Louis Brewers Guild Halloween Party

The annual St. Louis Brewers Guild Halloween Party in Lafayette Park returns this Saturday, Oct. 29, from 1 to 5 p.m. Like last year, I urge all you city dwellers who don’t venture into the county or over a river that often to acquaint yourselves with some amazing beer brewed outside STL city limits. Tickets are available online and at the door. Dress up and get your Halloween on!

 

1. Mark Twain Tennessee Fresh-Hopped Scrapbook Pale Ale Firkin (5.5 percent ABV)
This single-hopped pale ale boasts notes of citrus and spiced earthiness from the Columbus hops with a clean, crisp palate and biscuit-y mouth feel. Brewers Cat Golden and Dave Alley have once again fresh-hopped their Scrapbook pale ale and put it in a firkin for an exclusive Halloween Party real ale experience. Cascade, Centennial and Columbus hops from Willowbrook Farm in Tennessee provide more depth in hop expression, allowing for more intense notes of grapefruit, grass and spice.

2. Narrow Gauge Oast No. 3 (7 percent ABV)
One of the newer breweries in the St. Louis region, Narrow Gauge brings this American IPA dry-hopped with Simcoe, Amarillo and El Dorado. It is loaded with stone fruit, pineapple and dank aromas, exquisite mouth feel and juicy tropical fruit to round out the palate. Oast No. 3’s slight alcohol sweetness is balanced beautifully with a lingering bitterness you return to again and again.

3. O’Fallon Jack O’Latté (6.6 percent ABV)
Wait – another O’Fallon pumpkin beer? Oh yes, and it’s awesome. Jack O’Latte is a pumpkin milk stout that sat on Ronocco coffee beans, creating a brew filled with sweet, spice and everything nice. The sweet stout’s body states like a full-fat latte on a chill autumn day. And don’t worry, that signature O’Fallon pumpkin spice mix makes this coffee brew anything but basic. Move over, #PSL.

4. Old Bakery Beer Single-Source Coffee Lager (4.7 percent ABV)
This guy isn’t just any old lager beer. It’s stacked with heavily roasted malt for a darker appearance and richer palate, while flaked oats provide a bigger, smoother mouth feel. Complexity and intense roastiness is furthered with the addition of single-origin Honduran coffee from Kaldis.

5. Six Mile Bridge Harvest Peach Saison (5.4 percent ABV)
This lovely dry-hopped, French-inspired farmhouse ale is crisp as a fall day. Aromatics of stone fruit, citrus, flowers and hay pair nicely with juicy fresh peach, a refreshing yet subtle tartness, and clean bitterness on the palate. If the late summer transition into autumn were depicted in beer form, this would be it.

4. Fresh juice and good vibes were flowing on Tuesday at Source Juicery in downtown Edwardsville as owners Michelle Motley, Lisa Hudson and Chrissy Stevens, formerly of the Cleveland-Heath kitchen, opened the doors of their healthy food-to-go concept at 220 N. Main St.

5. A carryout taco joint and a recording studio walk into a bar … Rather, they share a space with one at 4916 Shaw Blvd., on The Hill, where patrons can now experience all three in one night at Cha Cha on Shaw, The Gaslight and Gaslight Studio.

Depending on the day, you might find Troika Brodsky at a Yoga Buzz event, Ices Plain & Fancy or working as executive director of the St. Louis Brewers Guild. After 14 years at Schlafly, Brodsky became a one-man PR machine for the Guild’s 40-plus area breweries. Here, his thoughts on the power of St. Louis beer.

Which came first: your love of beer or your job at Schlafly?
I got into beer because it was a job, and I stayed with it because it was a really cool job at a really cool company in a really cool industry. I fell in love with all three of those things, and at the same time … I really fell in love with my city.

What do you do as the Brewers Guild’s executive director?
Our city is awesome. What we haven’t always been awesome at is telling our story. … (This year), we will have more breweries operating in our city historically than ever before. … So my job is to tell really good stories about them.

What’s the mission of the Brewers Guild?
At its simplest, it’s beer tourism. Its mission is really one of education and promotion. … It’s about supporting its member breweries so that people know who they are, and hopefully purchase their products and visit their places.

You credit much of the STL beer scene’s success to the return of neighborhood breweries.
They have created their own little communities around themselves, and those communities are still big enough to support these paths of growth. … Part of what’s so awesome about our beer scene is everyone is doing their own thing.

Where do you see the local beer scene in five years?
I think you’re going to hear us talked about as much as any of the other big cities (with) beer scenes. … What’s going to differentiate us is being able to historically connect it back. … I think a lot of people think of Anheuser-Busch, and they don’t understand that we have had over 200 breweries here.

How will STLBG commemorate the 10th anniversary of Heritage Festival on June 11?
We are moving the event to the riverfront. … We wanted to do something really big to celebrate the milestone and where the beer community is right now. Throwing a world-class beer festival underneath the Arch and the Eads Bridge is as St. Louis as you’re going to get.

You co-founded Yoga Buzz, which hosts yoga events at local breweries and businesses, with your wife, Elle Potter. How is the work there similar to what you do at the Guild?
You’re creating community, and you’re operating as a connective tissue. There are a bunch of yoga studios, but Elle isn’t competing with them, she’s helping to promote them. … I’m not my own brewery and competing with them; I’m doing something to promote that whole community.

You also co-own Ices Plain & Fancy. Why did you take that on?
Ice cream is delicious, that’s why.

Fair point. But why open another ice cream shop?
Of course there are ice cream shops in St. Louis, but this is really, really good ice cream made in a really cool way. … St. Louis’ bullshit meters are pretty good. So if someone shows up and is screaming at the top of their lungs how cool they are, it’s going to raise some red flags for most of us. It’s put up or shut up. And that’s where we’ve had a lot of success.

What beer is in your fridge now?
I have two cans of Stag. I have a bottle of (Perennial) Abraxas on my dining room table, and I also have an Urban Chestnut sampler pack on my porch left over from a turkey fry.

Drink This Weekend Edition: 2nd Shift Technical Ecstasy

It wasn’t hard to find area brewery employees at the St. Louis Brewers Guild Heritage Festival last weekend. You just had to walk over to 2nd Shift Brewing’s booth, where a gaggle of brewery workers and beer nerds were all waiting to try owner-brewer Steve Crider’s new Czech-style Pilsner.

You see, a Czech Pils is a very technical beer style. It takes a deft hand not to screw it up. The style’s delicate nature means any flaws in the brewing process stick out like a sore thumb in the finished product. But Crider, who is best known for his top-notch IPAs and foray into Brett beers, was tempted to try this ambitious style after experiencing them on their home turf, Pilsen in the Czech Republic. And so, Technical Ecstasy was born.

Brewed with Bohemian Pils malt and Saaz hops (the standard for a Czech Pils), Technical Ecstasy pours a stunning hazy straw color with an enormous dense white head, the hallmark of a fresh Pilsner. The hops’ floral, slightly spicy aroma immediately lures you in. The medium-bodied mouth feel produces a soft, crackery maltiness immediately followed by spicy, slightly grassy notes. At 5.4 percent ABV, Technical Ecstasy is extremely crisp and refreshing; this beer can stand alone or pair with anything from chicken wings to a delicate pasta.

Technical Ecstasy is now available in 750-milliliter bottles at locations like Bombay Wines & Spirits and Fields Foods, and draft pours will be available at larger craft beer bars in the St. Louis area. Grab a bottle this weekend to see what all the fuss is about before our area brewers drink it all up.
