Drink This Weekend Edition: “Sugarless” wine sparkles at Rue Lafayette

Friday, March 23rd, 2012

I’m usually wary of so-called diet food products. Yes, they contain fewer calories than their full-flavored cousins, which allows weight-watchers and those on restricted diets to indulge without regret. But more often than not, the taste falls short of the real deal. So, when Uruguayan winery Vinos de la Cruz recently released its sugarless wines to the St. Louis market, I was curious whether this low-cal, almost sugar-free wine would pass the taste test.

Vinos de la Cruz, founded in 1887, may be the oldest winery in Uruguay but it’s entering a quite modern market with its line of sugarless wines, the only certified-organic wines for diabetics. Since the wines are also low in calories – containing half the calories of their full-sugar counterparts, according to Marcello Mieres, importer of the wines – these wines can also appease those on calorie-restricted diets.

The winery offers three sugarless wines: a sparkling white, a Malbec and a cabernet sauvignon. The latter two sipped OK, but it was the sparkling that awakened my taste buds. Made from 100-percent chardonnay grapes, Eco Colbert Sugarless Sparkling Wine is light and lively and doesn’t feel hollow in the way that some products that lack sugar (or use a sugar substitute) normally do. So what’s the secret?

Firstly, this brut is sweetened with stevia, a naturally sweet herb native to South America. Stevia truly deserves the label “supersweetener,” since the raw green leaf is 10 to 15 times sweeter than sucrose yet contains no sugar or calories. Secondly, the winery states that a special organic compost applied to the vines in turn helps to produce grapes with a yeast that consumes nearly all the sugars during fermentation. As Mieres pointed out, the wine is not 100-percent sugar-free, which is why it is instead called “sugarless.” The wines are verified as having a low glycemic index.

Looking for a gift for the diabetic wine-lover in your life – or perhaps the calorie-conscious girlfriend readying herself for bikini season? Eco Colbert Sugarless Sparkling Wine is a nice option. This wine and others in the Vinos de la Cruz portfolio are available at Rue Lafayette in Lafayette Square, priced at $8.25/glass and $25/bottle.
