Despite calls as early as the 1850s for baseball to become America’s national pastime, coverage of the game developed slowly. The lecture will examine the growth of visual baseball journalism in Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper and other weeklies–including St. Louis’ own Sporting News–from the middle of the 19th century to the early 20th century.
