Join us on Thursday, April 18, as part of the University Libraries’ Faculty Book Talk Series, Rafia Zafar, professor of English, African and African American studies, and American culture studies at Washington University in St. Louis, will discuss her new book, "Recipes for Respect: African American Meals and Meaning" (University of Georgia). The talk will take place at 4:30 p.m. in Room 142 of John M. Olin Library and will be followed by a reception.


In "Recipes for Respect", Zafar explores the importance of foodways to African American culture. She looks at how culinary traditions have served as a source of identity and pride for the black community. Zafar also chronicles the accomplishments of African American cooks and chefs who have played a role in shaping mainstream culinary tastes.


Copies of "Recipes for Respect" will be available for purchase on April 18. The event is free and open to the public.
