The Scoop: St. Patrick Center to open new breakfast and lunch spot, McMurphy’s Café

Enjoy good eats and a side of goodwill when McMurphy’s Café at St. Patrick Center opens tomorrow, Sept. 25, at 11 a.m. downtown at 800 N. Tucker Blvd. McMurphy’s Café serves as an employment-training program for clients of St. Patrick Center, a nonprofit that offers housing assistance, life-skills training and employment services for those who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. This isn’t St. Patrick Center’s first restaurant, though; in 1990, McMurphy’s Grill operated down the street from St. Patrick Center. Communication specialist Kathleen Nelson said McMurphy’s Grill provided culinary industry training that opened doors to entry-level positions and second chances for many St. Patrick Center clients. Nelson said the restaurant closed its doors in December 2012 in order to focus on a similar culinary concept inside of St. Patrick Center itself: McMurphy’s Café. “This proximity to the center itself, as well as the kitchen area on the fourth floor of St. Patrick Center, will allow us to integrate our training program a little better,” Nelson said, adding that the new location is more spacious and will allow for more clients to work at once. Clients are assigned various tasks such as food preparation or bussing tables to help prepare them for future careers in the food service industry. McMurphy’s Café will serve breakfast and lunch primarily for carryout orders, though roughly 30 seats will be available in a small dining room. Breakfast options include a frittata wrap filled with scrambled eggs, peppers, onions and cheese; fresh baked cookies; smoothies; or Starbucks coffee. For lunch, diners can choose from a selection of soups like French onion or St. Pat’s Irish beef stew, or they can feast on flatbreads topped with barbecue chicken, grilled vegetables and more. An assortment of sandwiches, wraps and salads with house-made dressings are also on the menu, along with sides of house-made McMurphy’s Irish chips. McMurphy’s Café will operate Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.Most Recent
