Balaban’s will return to CWE under new ownership

Central West End classic that moved west is heading back home. Balaban’s, which relocated to 1772 Clarkson Road in Chesterfield in 2009, has been sold and is returning to the CWE.

According to a press release, partners Brian Underwood and Steve McIntyre are selling the restaurant to Karen Halper. The sale is scheduled to close Thursday, Aug. 15 and the Chesterfield Balaban’s will shutter after service on Saturday, Aug. 10.

Halper also owns the Mahler Ballroom at 4915 Washington Blvd., Enchanting Embellishments and Mary Ann’s Tea Room at 4732 McPherson Ave., and Patty Long Catering.

In the release, Underwood and McIntyre cited their desire to retire as the main reason for the sale. Halper plans to reopen the restaurant at 412 N. Euclid Ave., directly across the street from its original location.

“As for me, I’m excited to return this iconic restaurant to its home in the Central West End,” Halper said in the release. “We will offer the original cafe menu, including Balaban’s signature dishes. Balaban’s current staff will have the opportunity to play a role in the new organization as we mesh my businesses into a larger whole and make use of the synergies between them. Balaban’s staff will have a chance to continue working with the Balaban’s brand and to grow.”

CWE Balaban's operations manager Ken Fowler said Halper owns the building and planning for the space is underway.

“Balaban's will be on the second floor, and there will be an elevator,” Fowler said. He said there is currently no estimated opening date since the planning process has just begun.
