Carmine’s Steak House, Lombardo’s Restaurant, Lombardo’s Trattoria, Terrazza Grill and now Angelo’s Taverna. Whether downtown, near the airport, or in South County, the Lombardo family appears well-poised to bring classic Italian fare into the mouths of more St. Louisans and visitors alike. The Lombardo’s have been serving up Italian cuisine in St. Louis for more than 75 years and are now adding to their legacy with Angelo’s Taverna, a casual, family-friendly spot downtown at 316 Market St., in the Drury Plaza Hotel at the Arch.
Angelo’s, which opened last Thursday in the space formerly occupied by Max and Erma’s, offers a range of appetizers, soups, salads, St. Louis-style thin-crust pizzas, burgers, sandwiches, pastas, steaks, chicken and fish entrées. Many items on the menu will be familiar to lovers of the Lombardos’ fare, particularly the family’s signature ravioli. These gargantuan, half-moon shaped ravioli filled with beef, chicken, spinach and Asiago cheese are available both boiled and as t-ravs. Another among the tried-and-true is the Italian sausage sandwich, a half-pound patty made in-house and served on garlic cheese bread with sautéed onions and peppers. One item unique to Angelo’s is the fried artichoke hearts, served with a garlic-butter sauce. “Everybody likes that,” said Tony Lombardo of the reception thus far. “It’s something different.”
Angelo’s is open Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday lunch hours are scheduled to begin in March.
