Since 1991 the fine folks at The St. Louis Brewery have been bringing us Schlafly beer in many forms. From the flagship pale ale that started it all to its newly introduced sour beer program, there truly is something for everyone. In 2006 Schlafly began their Reserve Series, introducing beer drinkers in St. Louis to locally brewed, barrel-aged beers. The 2013 Reserve Imperial Stout has recently been released and is a perfect accompaniment to upcoming fall and winter evenings.
Aged in freshly emptied Kentucky bourbon barrels, this beer brings together the best of the beer and spirits world. Jet black in color, the 2013 version has plenty of dark chocolate, vanilla and oak present in the aroma. The flavor is also impressive: a malt base with a nice mix of chocolate, sweet caramel and roasted malts.
Bourbon complements the beer extremely well. Its flavor is strong and warming, but it isn’t overwhelming. Look for secondary flavors of vanilla, molasses and oak that add quality depth and complexity to this decadent beer. I’d recommend serving it somewhere between cellar temperature and room temperature in order to get the aromas to open up and to experience the full flavor profile.
While definitely ready to drink now, Schlafly Reserve Imperial Stout is a candidate to cellar at home. Stored properly in a cool dark place, this beer can be enjoyed for a number of years. Occasionally, Schlafly will release some of its older vintages of this beer at The Schlafly Tap Room and Schlafly Bottleworks. If you see one, give it a go and decide whether you prefer it fresh or cellared.
Schlafly Reserve Imperial Stout is available now at The Tap Room, Bottleworks and most better beer stores. Look for it to always be available in 750-milliliter bottles and on tap at special events throughout the year.
