Narwhal’s Crafted co-founder Brad Merten recently joined The Sauce podcast with longtime friend and business partner Brandon Holzhueter to look back on a decade of scratch-made frozen cocktails and share what’s ahead for the St. Louis bar. The conversation covered everything from their original vision for Narwhal’s to its growing food program and plans for expansion. Merten also shared some of the restaurants he keeps coming back to, from a favorite takeout order to a ramen spot where even the wait outside is part of the experience.
Mai Lee
“My go-to, regular takeout restaurant. While I have explored much of their expansive menu over the years, No. 76 will forever be my No. 1.”
Corner 17
“Asian cuisine is by far my favorite, and I believe Corner 17 executes some of the best in the city. Can’t beat the homemade wontons with chili sauce.”
Menya Rui
“Top ramen in the city. I love the cozy and intimate setting, even the novelty of having to wait in a line outside, often in the cold. It’s all part of a great dining experience that is unlike anything else in St. Louis.”
Fox and Hounds
“Can’t beat the vibe. It’s like being transported to a cabin in the mountains. Who doesn’t love enjoying a cocktail by a fireplace?”
Mi Ranchito
“Been here countless times with my son since he was 2. It’s very much our ‘once a week’ dinner spot.”
Bonus pick: Ed’s Delicatessen (Edwardsville)
“Some of the best sandwiches and salads around, but even better people. Also, don’t sleep on their dinner menu because they are a very talented bunch over there. Always highly impressed.”
