La Crazy Margarita is now open on South Grand in St. Louis

La Crazy Margarita, a family-owned Mexican restaurant, opened in mid-February at 3131 S. Grand Blvd. The restaurant fills the space formerly occupied by Alta Calle.

Co-owners Romel Mayahua and Benito Mendieta wanted to open a typical Mexican American restaurant but also wanted to showcase more authentic Mexican foods. “I wanted to show people that, even though we’re mainly doing American, Tex-Mex food, on the weekends we’re making real Mexican food,” explained Mayahua, who is the stepson of Mendieta.

These special dishes have so far included chicken mixiote (a pit-barbecued meat dish) and caldo de siete mares (a seafood soup) but the specials will vary each weekend. During the week, they serve classic Mexican American fare like chimichangas, fajitas, burritos and quesadillas.

As the name suggests, the restaurant will also serve various kinds of margaritas. “We wanted to serve all different types of flavors, something you wouldn’t normally get at a Mexican restaurant,” Mayahua said. They’re still waiting on their liquor license, but as soon as they receive that, they’ll offer margaritas in flavors like spicy mango, banana, strawberry, pineapple and jalapeno. There will also be some Mexican beers available, though the owners aren’t sure when the liquor license might be approved.

Mayahua sees their restaurant as a relaxing place for guests to hang out even beyond enjoying their food. “People can enjoy sitting down just listening to music, watching TV or the cars going by,” he said. Including the bar and patio, the brightly colored space can accommodate nearly 100 people.

La Crazy Margarita is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Updates on their weekend specials are available on Facebook and Instagram.
