When we put on an exhibit of Sauce photography at The Philip Slein Gallery over the summer, photographer Greg Rannells couldn’t take his eyes off the coffee vac pots that Chris Lee of Sanctuaria brought to the event. He was immediately taken with them. I feel like he’s been thinking about coffee ever since.
For our March cover story, Coffee’s New Wave, the photos were to be stark and stripped down because I wanted them to reflect the effort people were making to produce purer, better tasting coffee. For the cover, I wanted a photo of one of the manual brewing methods we discussed in the article. When I saw the photo that ended up on the cover, I knew it spoke to the story. It was a pour over, it was modern, it worked with the cover line “Good to the last drop.” For me, it was love at first sight.
