Coffeestamp is bringing its newest location to Washington Avenue in downtown St. Louis. The locally owned roastery specializing in single origin beans already has locations on South Jefferson and in Hillman Hall at Washington University.
Co-owner Patrick Clapp and his brother, Spencer, had been looking for another spot for their family business when they were approached by developers looking to revitalize Washington Avenue in downtown St. Louis.
“We took the challenge, and we want to be part of that neighborhood and do our part to make it better,” Clapp said.
Coffeestamp was born as an idea in 2016 and as a roastery in 2018 before becoming the full-service stop for coffee and food that it is today. The Clapps focus first on where their beans come from, believing that sourcing is one of the most important features in a good cup of coffee.
The Clapps are originally from Honduras, and their beans come directly from their lifelong-friend Miguel Giron’s farm, La Finca Alondra San Vicente. Clapp describes Giron’s passion for organic, sustainable coffee as infectious.
“It’s something you cannot only admire, but copy and apply,” he said.
While sourcing is an important facet of a quality cup of coffee, Coffeestamp seeks to set customers up for success when brewing at home with the beans available for purchase from the shop. Clapp recommends grinding beans as needed instead of a whole bag at once. Instructions for a comprehensive variety of brewing methods, from automatic coffee pots to French presses to espresso machines, are available on the Coffeestamp website.
Along with made-to-order coffee and bags of beans, Coffeestamp also offers tea and kombucha, as well as a variety of empanadas, sandwiches, pastries and breakfast foods. While the new menu at Washington Avenue will be similar to the other two locations, the team is developing a few menu items, including a breakfast sandwich, that will be exclusive to downtown.
The new Coffeestamp at 1228 Washington Ave. is expected to open late this summer. In the meantime, visit one of their other locations or their website at coffeestamp.com to learn how to brew a cup of great coffee at home.
