Havana’s Cuisine, a beloved Cuban gem founded in 2019 by Tamara Landeiro, has found a new home at 12 S. Euclid Ave. in the Central West End, marking an exciting new chapter in its story. Known for its authentic flavors and warm, inviting ambiance, the restaurant’s relocation from downtown not only reflects its growth but also reinforces the enduring appeal of Cuban cuisine in St. Louis.

The decision to relocate from the original downtown location at 1131 Washington Ave. to the CWE was inspired by Landeiro’s deep-rooted connection to the neighborhood.  Having moved to St. Louis from Cuba to support their oldest daughter, Thalia Cervantes, in pursuing her dreams as a professional chess player, the Landeiro family is grateful for the opportunities the city’s Chess Club has provided. The CWE, a hub of intellectual and artistic energy, seemed an ideal setting to continue the restaurant’s mission of offering something truly unique to the region. “The neighborhood has a unique energy with its mix of residents, local businesses and an ever-growing dining scene, which makes it the perfect place for Havana’s Cuisine,” Landeiro explained.

However, the move was not just about the physical relocation, it was about connecting with the community. “This process wasn’t just about paperwork. It was an opportunity for me to introduce myself to the neighbors and connect with the community,” Landeiro reflected. “It gave me a chance to understand what they were expecting from us and what they hoped to see from Havana’s Cuisine in the new location.”

Since the relocation, the restaurant has seen a transformation in both its operations and offerings. A larger kitchen has afforded the team the freedom to experiment with complex Cuban dishes and introduce seasonal specials. The expanded space has also provided room for new Cuban cocktails and mocktails, further diversifying the menu. Yet, despite these exciting additions, Havana’s Cuisine remains firmly committed to its roots. “We want our guests to feel like they’re experiencing a little piece of Cuba, with the same flavors and love we’ve always poured into our dishes, no matter the size or layout of the restaurant,” Landeiro affirmed.

Dishes like her grandmother’s arroz con pollo offer a glimpse into Landeiro’s personal history, transforming every bite into a celebration of her family’s legacy and the dynamic flavors of Cuba. The Bartolo’s Plantains Platter, inspired by the beloved Cuban folk song “El Platanal de Bartolo,” evokes the lively spirit of Cuban social gatherings. Meanwhile, the iconic ropa vieja, Cuba’s most famous dish, features tender shredded beef simmered in a tomato-based sauce with onions, bell peppers, garlic and a blend of spices, delivering a rich, authentic taste of Cuban culinary tradition.

For Landeiro, the success of Havana’s Cuisine is not just about business, it’s about inspiring others. “For me, it was more than just sharing a personal story; it was a chance to inspire others, especially women and immigrants, who may face similar struggles in pursuing their passions.” Her journey, from humble beginnings at the Soulard Farmers Market to the success of a brick-and-mortar restaurant, is a testament to the resilience of immigrant entrepreneurship.

As Havana’s Cuisine settles into its new home in the Central West End, the future looks bright. “Everything we do is aligned with what we understand as our role and responsibility: bringing to this amazing city traditional Cuban cuisine, cooked by Cuban hands and sharing a piece of our heritage with the community we are so proud to serve,” Landeiro emphasized.

With a legacy rooted in family, authenticity and community, the restaurant is poised to become a staple of St. Louis’ culinary scene, offering diners a taste of Cuba with every bite and every sip.
