Sure, the Jewish High Holidays have come and gone, but I still can’t get enough of potato latkes, a hash brown hybrid that’s formed into a potato pancake. And if I’m ordering latkes, there’s only one place I’m going: Kopperman’s Deli in the Central West End.
These potato pancakes are fried to a crispy finish but remain soft on the inside with tastes of salt, pepper and crunchy onion in every bite. Although they are served with sour cream, I always ask for a side of house-made applesauce. The cold sauce, spiced with cinnamon, is the perfect partner to those piping hot, savory latkes. Taste one bite with a dollop of sour cream, and then try the next with a small scoop of velvety applesauce. Feeling adventurous? Try a bite with both. Whichever way you end up dressing your latke, you can’t go wrong at this New York-style Jewish deli.
The expansive menu does not stop short with potato pancakes; it boasts a host of other Meatless Monday options. Even though I’ve been tempted to order the Matzo and Eggs every time I dine at Kopperman’s, I somehow can’t bring myself to skip the latkes.
