For the first time, one of the nation’s most prestigious documentary festivals is coming to St. Louis. The Mountainfilm Festival, known for its compelling stories about adventure, activism, social justice, and environmental stewardship, will anchor the new Mound City Film Series, a monthly event hosted by Open Space STL in partnership with River City Outdoors, Swade Cannabis, and 4 Hands Brewing Co.
Running from April through September, the Mound City Film Series will take place at 4 Hands Brewing Co.’s location at 1220 S. Eighth St., blending film screenings with live music, guest speakers and curated culinary experiences. The six-month series celebrates the 60th anniversary of Open Space STL, a nonprofit focused on conservation and watershed restoration throughout the region.
The first event kicks off Wednesday, April 23, with “Interwoven: Stories of Land, Water, and Community,” a collection of short films that explore the human relationship with nature – from melting icebergs to resilient communities and the lasting marks we leave on the planet. Featured films include I Am the Nature, UsuGiliz Awakun, Healy, Mama’s Sundry, and Footprints on Katmai. The evening begins with live music at 4:20 p.m., followed by guest speakers at 6:30 and the screening at 7. The program will last approximately 90 minutes and will be hosted on the second floor of the brewery. Speakers include Bonnie Harper, executive director of Open Space STL, and Chris Trunk, hospitality director of 4 Hands Brewing Co.
Open to the public, each event in the series supports Open Space STL’s ongoing efforts in land conservation, watershed restoration, and ecological stewardship. “This series is a powerful way to celebrate 60 years of protecting the open spaces that define our region,” said Charles Whitt, Development and Marketing Manager at Open Space STL, in a release. “Through these films, we hope to inspire action and connection.”
Additional events in the series are scheduled for Wednesday, May 28; Wednesday, June 18; Wednesday, July 23; Wednesday, August 20; and Wednesday, Sept. 24. Each will feature a different theme and selection of films. For detailed lineups, guest speaker info, and updates, visit 4 Hands’ Facebook events page.
