If you’ve driven down Oakland lately, you may have noticed that there’s an additional eating option at The Highlands complex along Highway 40. Sabu’s Coffee, located at 5708 Oakland, has offered a thoughtful selection of breakfast and lunch fare since it opened last month.
Croissants, bagels and sandwich breads come fresh from Companion, while in-house baker Sarah LeCave, a former pastry chef for Bailey’s Chocolate Bar, mixes up sweet snacks like muffins, brownies, cakes and cookies—that hulky gooey butter cake cookie is the hot seller.
For lunch, Sabu’s currently offers paninis and salads plus a soup of the day and a daily special. “As we go along, we’ll add more items,” said owner Virgil Avanzado, aka Sabu among friends.
Sabu’s carries Goshen coffee and the Edwardsville, Ill., roaster has created a blend just for this cozy coffeehouse. Considering the rising temps, a hot cup of java might not be your cup of tea. Sabu’s has the cool side covered with selections like iced or blended espresso beverages, orange mango smoothies and frozen chai tea lattes to quench your thirst either before or after you battle summer crowds at the science center or the zoo. And once the mercury drops a bit, the covered patio with plenty of tables and chairs out front are sure to gather a crowd.
