What happens when a tattoo artist finds herself with a bit of free time? She heads to the kitchen to sculpt artsy cakes. Kerry Soraci began baking cakes in 2009 after an accident left her recuperating at home. The cakes served as gifts of appreciation to well wishers.
“I slowly realized that I could cut them into shapes, use ice cream like clay and sculpt [the cakes],” she explained. Soraci, who also works part time as a tattoo artist at Iron Age Studio, initially operated I Scream Cakes out of her home. She is now poised to enter the next phase of her business: opening up shop at 2641 Cherokee St., in South St. Louis City.
When Soraci unlocks the storefront later this month, customers will be able to grab a barstool and sit at the countertop while enjoying a sweet selection of ice cream cakes, cupcakes, sorbets, sundaes, sodas, floats and a dozen flavors of house-made ice cream. Soraci will use sundae toppings and soda syrups made by Snarky Jar, a small gourmet canned and preserved foods biz that shares the kitchen with I Scream Cakes.
Those looking to order a cake can have it the traditional way, but the I Scream way is much cooler. A flour-based cake (gluten-free is an option) is topped with a layer of ice cream and your choice of white, milk or dark chocolate ganache, peanut butter ganache or cream cheese. I Scream Cakes offers a wide selection of sizes, from intimate 4-inch cakes to sheet cakes that serve nearly 50 people. Check out the gallery of edible art cakes on the I Scream Cakes Web site.
We’ll all be screaming for I Scream Cakes when doors open Thursday, April 28. Hours of operation will be noon to 8 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, with Sundays to be added soon thereafter.
