For the last eight years, husband and wife team Randy and Connie Hamann have been growing Norton grapes and other varietals on their 10 acres of land in Ste. Genevieve County. Now they’re ready for wine aficionados to pay a visit to their newly constructed winery, Weingarten Vineyard, located at 12323 Highway 32. A unique establishment, we’re excited for the facility to open its doors in March.
The building measures a colossal 20,000 square feet and was designed by Randy Hamann. The main area, with its graceful arched wood ceiling, includes a stunning three-story stone fireplace that separates a tasting bar and a comfy lounge. “Pictures don’t do it justice,” said Connie Hamann. “It’s not your typical tasting room.” The building also houses a deli, a banquet area, a smaller meeting room and a cellar for intimate gatherings. Many indoor spots offer a view of the spectacular outdoor surroundings, but the vista can also be enjoyed outside on a covered patio and elevated decking areas – even on the grass come spring.
Guests at Weingarten will be able to sample a variety of wines from both Missouri and California. Growing in the Weingarten vineyard (besides Norton grapes) are Chambourcin, Vignoles and Viogier varietals. In addition, the owners are making wine using grapes from other area growers, such as Vivant (which turns out a dry white). Heading up the winemaking operation is Jay Hansmann.
Weingarten will also have an on-site brewmaster and will have three brews available at any given time. The beer will only be available at Weingarten, however, as there are no plans for distribution.
When Weingarten opens in March, food will be available at a deli, where offerings will include soups, chowders, paninis, fruit and cheese platters and pizza made in a wood-fire oven imported from Italy. A restaurant, featuring a menu of upscale contemporary American cuisine, is soon to follow.
