Yaqui’s on Cherokee, a restaurant and wine bar, is moving closer to unlocking doors. As recently reported by Nancy Stiles of the Riverfront Times, construction at 2728 Cherokee St., delayed the opening, which is now anticipated for late February.
The project is a new venture by Richard J. Rodriguez, an artist and former teacher. He began a gut rehab of the space – once a tavern for the Cherokee Brewing Co. – last fall, and he is using numerous reclaimed materials to restore the building and bring back original architectural elements like brick archways and glass windows once covered for decades.
When Yaqui’s opens, it will specialize in wood-fired Neapolitan pizzas (plus barbecue on weekends), along with fine wines. The restaurant also will have a separate carryout counter in the adjoining storefront.
