A major addition to St. Louis’ live music scene is on the way as The Sovereign, a 1,200-capacity concert venue, breaks ground in the Grand Center Arts District. The project, led by the Kranzberg Arts Foundation, Old Rock House Concerts, and New + Found, is set to bring new energy to the historic neighborhood.

The venue will be located in the former Pavyer Printing Machine Works building at 3306 Washington Blvd., a site with a rich history tied to both music and industry. Renovations on the space have already begun, with a projected completion date in late summer 2025.

Grand Center Arts District has long been a cornerstone of St. Louis’ arts and entertainment landscape, home to world-class venues and innovative arts organizations. The addition of The Sovereign is expected to bolster the district’s reputation, drawing thousands of visitors each year and further supporting the local creative economy.

“This old building has music in the walls – you can feel it,” said Tim Weber, managing partner of Old Rock House Concerts, in a release. “They used to sell REO Speedwagon cars and assemble RCA speakers here. I am thrilled to be working with this team to add The Sovereign to St. Louis’ storied legacy of independent concert venues.”

Chris Hansen, executive director of the Kranzberg Arts Foundation, emphasized the broader impact of the venue. “The Sovereign will bring another exciting, independent music venue to the already thriving Grand Center Arts District, creating meaningful music industry jobs, new opportunities for St. Louis musicians, and bringing well over 100,000 new people a year into the district,” he said in the release.

For New + Found, the project represents a continuation of their mission to blend historic preservation with modern development. “New + Found’s commitment to St. Louis and Grand Center has always been about investing in the city’s future by restoring its past,” said Steve Smith, developer of The Sovereign and Founder of New + Found. “The Sovereign is a perfect example of that vision – transforming a historic space into a dynamic concert venue that will bring people, music, and opportunity to the heart of the city.”

As anticipation builds for its opening, The Sovereign is poised to become a major destination for live entertainment, reinforcing Grand Center’s status as the cultural heartbeat of St. Louis.
