If you’re looking for a Halloween-season cocktail with a little theater, order the Who Goes There? off-menu special at Frazer’s Restaurant & Lounge in Benton Park. This smoky rum-based riff on an Old-Fashioned arrives in a lantern, delivered by a hooded, Gryffindor-clad server wielding a walking stick. He approaches the table to the ominous, rhythmic thump of his walking stick, then opens the lantern to reveal the cocktail inside, releasing a cloud of cherry amaretto smoke. It’s all very Wizarding World, in the best possible way.
The cocktail itself is made with Plantation OFTD rum and Plantation 5 Year rum, maple, Ramazzotti amaro, Angostura and chocolate bitters. It’s quite smoky on the nose, but the smoke mellows as the drink dilutes, making it a little more approachable as you sip. For maximum effect, come after dark and consider making it your second drink rather than your first.
If smoky cocktails aren’t your thing, the Lake Como is another excellent choice, with a fruitier, more tropical profile, though it doesn’t quite have the same Halloween magic.
