A high-speed blue blur is about to race onto the Delmar Loop. The Sonic the Hedgehog Speed Cafe – a traveling, fully themed dining pop-up inspired by the long-running Sonic the Hedgehog franchise – will make its St. Louis debut on April 25, temporarily taking over Nudo House at 6105-A Delmar Blvd. through June. The limited-time concept marks the seventh iteration of the experience nationwide and its first stop in Missouri.

The project comes from a collaboration between SEGA and Andy Nguyen, whose past pop-ups have leaned into immersive, fandom-driven dining. Here, the goal is simple but ambitious: translate Sonic’s high-energy world into something you can eat, drink and step inside.

Nguyen says the idea has been years in the making. Having grown up with Sonic across games, cartoons and now movies with his own kids, he saw an opportunity to turn that longevity into a real-world experience. The character’s famously chaotic love of chili dogs became a natural starting point – and eventually, the backbone of an entire menu.

Inside, the space will be transformed with custom visuals designed to pull diners into Sonic’s universe, from bold, colorful graphics to character-driven details woven throughout. Even the packaging gets the full treatment, with St. Louis-exclusive designs featuring familiar faces from the franchise.

The menu follows suit, leaning heavily into playful references. Core items include a Sonic Chili Dog, Knuckles-inspired fried chicken sandwich and “Power-Up” onion rings, alongside drinks like the Sonic Boom Lemonade and Chaos Emerald Refresher.

But the St. Louis version isn’t just a copy-and-paste. The menu has been tailored in collaboration with Nudo House owners Qui Tran and Marie-Anne Velasco, incorporating local flavor and a few Loop-specific exclusives. Among them: the Arch City Hot Dog, topped with pulled pork, barbecue sauce and crunchy onions, and a spicy fried chicken sandwich coated in Red Hot Riplets. There’s also a lineup of sides that range from gouda mac and cheese bites to corn ribs with gochujang mayo.

One notable crossover remains from Nudo House itself: its well-known crab Rangoons. Nguyen describes their inclusion as intentional – a way to acknowledge the restaurant’s roots and give visiting Sonic fans a taste of something distinctly St. Louis.

For Tran, hosting the pop-up is about more than just the menu. He sees it as a chance to spotlight the city on a larger stage. While the collaboration taps into his own childhood nostalgia, he notes that bringing an activation like this to St. Louis – ahead of many larger markets – is an opportunity to challenge the “flyover city” label and showcase the energy of the local dining scene. He hopes the response helps open the door for more concepts, pop-ups and national attention down the line.

That balance between global brand and local identity is part of what makes the pop-up feel more considered than a typical themed takeover. It’s not just about spectacle; it’s about planting the experience, however briefly, in the city it’s visiting.

Since debuting in San Diego in 2023, the Speed Cafe has drawn long lines in multiple cities, fueled by a mix of nostalgia and novelty. Nguyen believes Sonic’s staying power plays a big role in that appeal – a character who, somehow, still resonates across generations without losing his edge.

For now, the focus is squarely on St. Louis. Nguyen notes that activations like this don’t come here often, and the team is aiming to deliver something that feels worth the wait – a full-throttle, blink-and-you’ll-miss-it kind of experience before the space eventually shifts back to its usual Nudo House programming at the end of June.
