What can I say about this month’s cover feature, The Alchemy of Sake, besides the fact that it was the hardest story I have ever worked on? Honestly, it took forever. I think there were a couple of nights when it was 2 a.m., we were still at the office working on sake and we were wondering if this thing would ever be finished. It’s really about how to brew something, which is a science, exact, so I wanted it to be as clear as possible. And I’m happy to say that I love how it turned out. All the photos in the story felt like an experiment, like they had been shot in a lab, including the bottles that introduce the story. And as for the cover, the frosty, cool colors make it feel like wintertime and make for a clean, crisp and lovely way to welcome the new year.
