Spencer Strode, co-owner of Midtown’s newest fine dining spot Aubrey, was recently on The Sauce podcast with team member Trey Stevenson, talking about hospitality, friendship and the ideas behind the new restaurant. We also featured Aubrey in our July Hit List as the restaurant settled into its first season. On the podcast, Strode shared a little more about his own dining habits, including the St. Louis restaurants he returns to whenever he gets the chance. Here are five of his favorites.

Carl’s Drive In
“My dad grew up in Brentwood, so Carl’s Drive In has been my favorite burger since I was a kid. Everything about it is so special to me and feels like St. Louis.”

Annie Gunn’s
“Annie Gunn’s has been my favorite sit-down restaurant my whole life. I’ve enjoyed family dinners, quick lunches, date nights and just some good laughs at the bar. That’s my No. 1.”

Louie on DeMun
“Louie on DeMun doesn’t need much explanation. The freshness, the creativity, but the overall experience when dining there has been something I have studied for a while. The way the place and staff make you feel is second to none.”

Gioia’s Deli
“I am quite the sandwich fan, and on a popular note, Gioia’s has its fame for great reason. The Porknado is up there with Annie Gunn’s meatloaf for my deathbed meal.”

Westchester
“Last but not least, I’d love to shine a little light on Westchester in the Valley. Chef Matt Glickert is as cool as it gets in this industry, and being able to learn and lean on someone as knowledgeable and talented as him has helped with Aubrey immensely. Such a cool vibe and wonderful food. Little bit of a hidden gem but definitely worth it.”
