Kabul Express STL, a family-owned Afghan restaurant, opened in March at 7704 Ivory St. in Carondelet. Originally a takeout spot with minimal seating at 300 Hoffmeister Ave. in South County, Kabul Express has opened a larger location that offers sit-down service as well as takeout.
Owner Kauash Adalat has lived in Afghanistan, India, Germany and now the U. S., so his cooking is inspired by all these unique cultures and cuisines. Adalat operates the restaurant with the assistance of his wife Samera, his sister Miriam and his two sons Roman and Romal. “Everything comes from our heart,” he shared.
The dishes include customer favorites like chicken and beef kebabs, pita bread, mantu beef dumplings, rice bowls, falafel and gyros. They also offer weekly and even daily specials that have included braised lamb shank and a spicy lamb kebab rolled with beef. For now, guests can get standard beverages like water, soda and tea and enjoy baklava for dessert.
At around 2,700 square feet, Kabul Express STL is spacious and modern with wood floors and industrial lighting. It can accommodate about 50 people. The restaurant is currently open 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Friday and will have weekend hours in the coming weeks. With the larger space, they plan to host private events and live music.
