Last week at the Webster Groves Farmers Market I passed by the booth for Moder Valley Nursery, a local nursery that recently delved into growing lettuce, heirloom tomatoes, cucumbers and berries that’s run by brothers Jeff and Greg Parkinson. I was on the hunt for Sungolds, my favorite tomatoes for their almost-candy flavor and glorious orange color. Moder Valley had what I thought were my beloved tomatoes, but they were something different: Sun Sugar tomatoes. “It’s the first year we’ve grown them,” Jeff said.
I bought them thinking, how different could they be? After all, they looked just like Sungolds. But to my pleasant surprise, they were even better. Their skin was super thin and they were even sweeter than Sungolds. In fact, they were the sweetest tomatoes I’d ever tasted.
Don’t believe me? Head to the Webster Groves Farmers Market today from 3 to 7 p.m., and pick up a pint for just $2. Don’t have cash? Don’t worry; Moder Valley Nursery takes credit cards.
