Editor’s Note: Hiro Asian Kitchen has closed

Last year, Japanese izakaya restaurant Hiro closed its doors in The Loop. Its home at 609 Eastgate Ave., was demolished to make way for a mixed-use development by Washington University. Hiro owner Bernie Lee and his business partner Sui Toh didn’t call it quits; they decided to take their restaurant downtown to 1405 Washington Avenue, most recently the home of Smash Bar. Hiro 2.0, however isn’t a Japanese eatery. At Hiro Asian Kitchen, the concept is pan-Asian comfort food that hails from Lee’s native Malaysia, executive chef Andy Huang’s Taiwan, as well as China, Singapore and other Asian countries.
The bar at Hiro Asian Kitchen opens today. Next week, the restaurant will begin food service, offering lunch, dinner and late-night dining. The menu is divided into appetizers, soups and salads, ramen, fried rice dishes, entrees dubbed “Family Traditions” and desserts. Diners will find numerous vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free items among dishes.
Lee gave Sauce a glimpse of the renovated space. Take a look on our Facebook page – then check back soon for a peek at the food at Hiro Asian Kitchen.
