If former police officers are going to start a second career in the restaurant biz, it’s only natural that they specialize in the food cops love the most: doughnuts. That’s exactly what Frank and Linda Loforte, both retired police officers for the city of St. Louis, did when they opened Ex Cop Donut Shop at 4584 Telegraph Road in Oakville recently.
The shop offers a wide selection of doughnuts – from the standard glazed to offbeat flavors like Butterfinger, strawberry cheesecake, chocolate-covered espresso bean and the best-selling bacon long john (pictured). That last one features maple frosting topped with sweet applewood-smoked bacon. Ex Cop Donut Shop also offers a variety of Italian baked goods – from cookies to pastries to breads, using family recipes from Frank’s Sicilian clan. Belgian waffles are also available, made with a special sugar that caramelizes inside the waffle during cooking for a breakfast treat so sweet, it’s served without any syrup or whipped cream. The shop serves Kaldi’s coffee and espresso drinks to wash down all those sugar-spiked goods.
Ex Cop Donut Shop is open every day except Monday, from 5 a.m. to 2 p.m., closing an hour earlier on Sunday. Then again, you can just drive by and look for the “on duty” sign in the window. If it’s lit, the ex-cops are at your service. The company’s website is currently under construction, but you can find out more about Ex Cop Donut Shop – and view some mouth-watering doughnuts – on its Facebook page.
