0202_pigsFarrar Out Farm owners Bryan and Christina Truemper will light out this winter for warmer pastures in Asheville, N.C., where they’ll manage a 15-acre organic produce farm. Chefs and home cooks alike will miss Christina Truemper’s gentle demeanor and Bryan Truemper’s ready smile at local markets.

The good news is we’ll still be able to buy Farrar Out Farm’s Berkshire and Red Wattle pork, tasty chickens and the traditional Thanksgiving bird, and restaurant chefs will still serve great farm-to-table chicken and pork entrées, because the Truempers have found a buyer – and the new owner isn’t messing with success. Mid-February, Colby Jones, the Truempers’ main farm hand and ace turkey tamer, will take ownership of the Frohna, Mo., farm.

Jones, who turned 21 last June, has been with working at the farm for five years. “I’ll be feeding the animals the special mix Bryan developed. No hormones, no antibiotics – things should be pretty much the same,” he said.

Jones, who raised the 300 turkeys so many enjoyed last Thanksgiving, is making one change. He’s raising 400 birds this year to keep up with the demand the Truempers created for fresh-dressed, pasture-raised, flavorful birds.
