Here’s some news for all you downtown workers and residents looking for a new place to pick up some mean barbecue: Give Mama Carlies a call when the calendar flips to 2011.
Mama Carlies is moving in at 742 S. Fourth St., near Busch Stadium in the space formerly occupied by Imo’s Pizza. The restaurant will be a “‘mom’s recipes’ type of thing,” said owner Clarence Moore. Actually, it will be Moore’s own mom, Carlies, doing the cooking. She’ll be barbecuing with local meat, making sides with fresh produce and whipping up homemade cakes and pies. The family previously operated Carlies Eatery in Bridgeton.
While the restaurant will initially offer carryout and delivery only, Moore plans to expand to dine-in service, complete with a bar, using the 2,000 square feet of space upstairs. The expansion, Moore said, should happen six months to a year after Mama Carlies initially opens its doors, which is slated for Jan. 1.
