The owners of Mango Peruvian Cuisine have announced plans to close the original Mango, located at 7307 Watson Road in Shrewsbury. All staff from the Shrewsbury location will move to the downtown spot.
Owners Jorge and Nori Calvo, along with longtime friends and business partners Paul and Sherry Sawchak, decided to sell the restaurant on Watson in order to focus on the growth and operation of the downtown restaurant, which they opened at 1001 Lucas Avenue, near the Washington Loft District, nearly a year and a half ago.
In a press release issued today, Jorge Calvo, who is also Mango’s executive chef, explained a bit of the reasoning behind the decision. “We love Shrewsbury, but the pulse of Mango has shifted to downtown and we have a great opportunity to further develop our operation there. We put in seven amazing years in Shrewsbury and now our desire is to match, if not exceed, the same kind of success in downtown St. Louis.”
Much of Mango’s signature style is a direct result of the Calvos, a close-knit, native Peruvian family who have run restaurants for the past 30 years in both the U.S. and Peru. Mango’s Shrewsbury location will continue its regular operation until March.
