Editor’s Note: Coastal Bistro & Bar has closed.

Mosaic Bistro Market, which opened last fall at 14 North Central Ave., in Clayton, has been re-concepted. As of last Friday, the restaurant is now Coastal Bistro & Bar and is specializing in seafood, as first reported by St. Louis Magazine’s George Mahe.

Frank Schmitz, co-owner of Coastal, explained the thinking behind the new concept: “We planned to change the Mosaic brand to a brand that was more in fitting with the clientele that has visited us since last September,” he said. “We created an oyster bar. We made decorative changes to create a few more private table areas. And we have taken the market shelf out, thus creating more space for dining, and changed the men to reflect a more Gulf Coast (low-country style), West Coast and East Coast culinary variety.”

The new menu is split between small plates (shrimp and grits, bistro sliders, fried green tomatoes, mini lobster rolls) and large plates (herb-roasted chicken, crawfish canelloni, lamb tajine, wild mushroom ravioli). In addition to the raw bar, there are a variety of chilled seafood dishes available called seafood towers that include crab claws, crab legs, lobster, shrimp, clams and oysters. Monday through Friday from 3 to 6 p.m., Coastal will be selling Gulf Coast oysters for $1.50 a piece and oyster shooters for $2 a piece, along with drink specials, for happy hour.

The restaurant is owned by the Schmitz family who own the Barcelona and Mosaic families of restaurants.
